The bonfires are a integral part of the game. Everytime you rest, you reset your Estus Flasks, respawn enemies to farm exp and you can teleport later with the Lordvessel. If you manage to lit every bonfire and randomly count them all (because why not), you will see that there are a total of 43 bonfires in the game. If you count the Lordvessel aswell it's 44.
