Introduction

Mario Bros. is a two-dimensional arcade-style platform game released on various platforms, including Nintendo, Game Boy Advance, and Atari. Your job, as the player, is to combat an endless horde of critters and fireballs that emerge from the drainpipes. You will need to come up with some quick strategies to survive, as not all of these pests will be eliminated in the same way.

Controls

  • D-Pad: Move left or right

  • A Button: Jump or punch from below

  • START: Pause/Start

  • SELECT: Select game mode

Gameplay

While you can play individually as you wish, you can also play a two-player game, in which one player controls Mario while another controls Luigi.

To advance from level to level, you must defeat a certain number of enemies, achieved by striking the platforms they walk along or hitting either of the two POW Blocks (up to three times each), and then finally kicking them off the screen, thus rewarding you 800 points. However, if left alone for a long period of time, enemies will eventually regain their consciousness and continue moving. After an enemy is kicked away, a coin (or wafer in the Atari 2600 version) appears from the pipes. They can be collected for additional points. Enemies appear from the top pipes and make their way down to the bottom, where there are also pipes that take them back to the top. Newer enemies begin to appear in later levels.

There are a total of 99 phases in the game, and after completion of phase 99, it loops that phase from that point on. The highest possible score players can achieve is 999,990.

Every once in a while, players participate in a bonus level, which simply involves collecting all of the coins within a specific time limit. Collecting all coins rewards an extra point bonus, consisting of anywhere between 3,000 and 5,000. As with regular phases, bonus phases also increase in difficulty.

Three different death sprites have been created for Mario and Luigi: a frozen sprite for colliding with Slipice and Icicles, a burnt one for touching Fireballs, and finally, a generic one for touching all other enemies.

The only real way you can defeat your foes is to knock them upside down, then knock them off the platforms. Of course, if things get too hectic, your good old friend, the almighty POW button, is there to assist you. Just one hit from below, and all your enemies are stunned for a brief moment, so act quickly and kick them off the ledge and claim any coins that spawn from the pipes above.
